Your Fall Home Checklist: What to Handle Before a Kentuckiana Winter

Before winter hits Kentuckiana, clean your gutters, look over your roof and siding for damage, seal gaps around windows and doors, and check for hidden water problems under sinks and in basements. Fall is also the best time to plan an indoor remodel, so your project can start in winter and be finished by spring.
The leaves are turning, the mornings are crisp, and somewhere in the back of your mind you know the cold is coming. Here in Louisville and Southern Indiana, winter is usually more wet and up-and-down than snowy. That freeze, thaw, freeze again pattern is exactly what finds the weak spots in a house.
A little attention now can save you a lot of stress (and money) in January. Here is the checklist we walk through with our own families, plus when it makes sense to call in a pro.
What should I check on the outside of my house before winter?
Start from the top and work your way down.
- Gutters and downspouts. Once most of the leaves are down, clear them out. Clogged gutters send water over the edge and right toward your foundation. Make sure downspouts point at least a few feet away from the house.
- Roof. From the ground, look for missing, curled, or cracked shingles and anything that looks out of place around chimneys and vents. You do not need to climb up there. If something looks off, have it looked at before the first hard freeze.
- Siding and trim. Soft spots, peeling paint, and gaps let moisture in, and winter makes small problems bigger.
- Decks, porches, and steps. Check for loose boards, wobbly railings, and rot. Icy steps are no place for a surprise.
- Outdoor faucets and hoses. Disconnect hoses and shut off and drain outdoor spigots so pipes do not freeze and split.
What should I check inside?
- Windows and doors. Feel for drafts on a windy day. Worn weatherstripping and cracked caulk are easy to miss and add up on your heating bill.
- Under sinks and behind appliances. Look for drips, stains, or warped cabinet bottoms around the kitchen sink, dishwasher, and washing machine. Slow leaks do their worst damage where you cannot see them.
- Basement and crawl space. Damp walls, musty smells, or water marks are signs to deal with now, before winter rain and melting snow add more.
- Furnace and smoke detectors. Schedule your HVAC service, change the filter, and test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
What are the warning signs I need a contractor, not a weekend fix?
Some things are bigger than a Saturday project. Call a licensed general contractor if you notice:
- Water stains on ceilings or walls
- Soft or sagging spots in floors, especially near the kitchen or bathroom
- Rotted framing, sill plates, or deck supports
- Roof damage after a storm
- Mold or a musty smell that keeps coming back
These usually point to water that has been working on your home for a while. Catching it in the fall means it gets repaired properly, not patched in a hurry during a January cold snap. Restoration work like this is a big part of what we do, from tracking down the source of the water to rebuilding what it damaged.
Why is fall a good time to plan a remodel?
Most people think about remodeling in spring. That is exactly why fall is the smart time to start planning.
- You get ahead of the spring rush. Contractor schedules fill up fast once the weather warms. Planning now puts you near the front of the line.
- Indoor projects work great in winter. Kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and interior restorations are not slowed down by the weather.
- Time to make good decisions. Design choices, material selection, and permits all take time. Doing that work over the holidays means less waiting later.
- Ready for spring. Start the conversation in the fall, build in the winter, and enjoy the finished space when the weather turns nice.

Frequently asked questions
When should I get my home ready for winter in Louisville?
Late October through mid-November is ideal. Most leaves are down, so gutters stay clear, and you can still fix problems before the first hard freeze.
Can a remodel be done during the winter?
Yes. Interior projects like kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and water damage restoration work well in winter because weather does not slow them down.
How do I know if I have hidden water damage?
Look for stains on ceilings or walls, warped cabinet bottoms, soft spots in floors, peeling paint, and musty smells that keep coming back. Any of these are worth having a contractor inspect.
